A Bit About Us

It started in 1996. I was in the computer lab at the University of Tennessee at Martin working on one of my very first programming assignments. I caught a glimpse at a classmate's monitor and saw him working on his web page. By today's standards it was pretty simple, a background color, some text, and a photo, but I wanted one of my own. I asked him a few questions and I was hooked.

Since then I have designed a lot of web sites and applications, many of which are still successfully performing the tasks they were designed to perform. Many of which have become obsolete or traded in for updated versions. Since then I also learned that I am not just a software developer. I am a solutions developer. The software was just the means to solve a problem or problems. Just typing code was only one part of the creative process that comes with constructing software. There is a great reward in helping someone with a problem by planning a solution and executing it with software.

What's a Lúfar?

My consulting practice has gone through several iterations over the years and the road has led here to Lúfar Solutions. Lúfar is Irish for Agile. The name represents my Irish heritage and a key concept in software construction, Agility. We've even incorporated the concept in our logo, with a Celtic spin of course.

This concept is so important to what we do as successful software developers. Instead of trying to explain what Agile means I'll let the very smart group of developers who coined the term do so:

Manifesto for Agile Software Development

We are uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it and helping others do it.
Through this work we have come to value:

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.
